On Monday, 13th September 2021, many celebrities joined forces and attended the Met Gala 2021. It’s an event where the stars look nice, pose and make a fashion faux pas or a statement. Many people across the UK have no idea what it is, so not only will I judge the looks like Miranda Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada, but I’ll also explain what the Met Gala is for the uninitiated!
What is the Met Gala
The Met Gala used to be known as the Costume Institute Gala or the Costume Institute Benefit and known as the Met Ball. Every year the celebrities turn up on the red carpet in a particular theme to help fundraise for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute. You either know a designer, get invited or pay a tremendous amount of money to get in. As mentioned above, every year there’s a theme. This years theme was American independence.
The four best looks
1. Anouk Yai
The model’s dress was eye-catching. The golden/ white stars and moons against the black of the dress stand out well, and the close fit to the body makes it look flowy and dynamic but still retains this classic look. The feather boa on the arms also sells the elegant simplicity of the dress. I love it!
2. Billie Eilish
The seventeen-year-old punk queen isn’t just a promising songstress. She is also the queen of style. When you think American, you think of classic icons such as Marilyn Monroe or Grace Kelly. If no one tried to dress similarly to them. I would’ve been gutted. So when the kid turns up in a stunning golden rose ball gown designed by Oscar de la Renta with her hair in a do similar to that of the queens of style, it instantly harks back to the American style of the 60s. Classy, elegant, regal, and the colour suits her and suits the theme well. Definitely a statement
3. Maisie Williams
The outfit made by Ruben Selby puts a modern twist on a classic. With the back of the dress that hits the floor and then flows out. However, unlike standard dresses in that fashion, the front part is cut off to make it more like a bodysuit paired with tights and in high heels by Nodaleto. It was a modern Morticia Adams style of dress, and it looked elegant, classy and had the makings of a typical American dress done anew.
4. Little Nas X
Little Nax X and his designer Atelier Versace pulled out all the stops on the red carpet with three outfits he had to change out of with help from a dedicated team. The first of the three outfits were a golden train, which changed to a golden metal-like structure compared to C3P0 and changed to a nan animal print catsuit. It does remind me of Lady Gaga’s outfit, which changed throughout the evening a few years ago. The outfit is made into a spectacle and features designs reminiscent of pop culture or are popular in the States. I couldn’t ignore it and not put it on the list as its another truly American design
The four fashion faux pas.
1. Kim Kardashian
When you think American, dressing from head to toe entirely in black is not what you expect. God knows why Kim Kardashian thought this was a good idea. In terms of theme and execution, it looks terrible. Whilst it’s the next big meme format, and yeah, we’re talking about it. It doesn’t mean it looks good.
2. ASAP Rocky
Now, this is a disappointing design. At first, you have the oversized coat that is multicoloured and promises to reveal something extraordinary. ASAP Rocky even takes off the coat in a dramatic fashion to get you to think as much. To display a black suit. While it’s an American theme, a black suit and tie are American-style compared to other suits. It is tedious and plain and offers nothing new. On top of that, to reveal something new and then not a big fail. Only Eliot Page is allowed to wear a black suit as it’s his first Met Gala being who he truly is.
3. Isabelle Huppert
Now don’t get me wrong, the dress is red and long and has a puffed out end at the bottom. Typical of American film premiers, and whilst the velvet is luxurious, it doesn’t look nice and is a bit too textured for my taste. Plus, it isn’t as inventive or creative as other designs. Don’t get me wrong, it looks nice, but it is forgettable, so it’s a fashion faux pas for me.
4. Rebecca Hall
The material on this dress looks like plastic, and whilst the colours look good, and how they are laid out, it doesn’t work for me. The design, for me, doesn’t scream American or American independence. It’s a boring dress that looks cheap.
There were many stand-out designs that I didn’t mention that were stylish, unique, and looked terrific. Such as Rhianna, Dan Levy, Yara Shaidi, Emma Raducanu, Nikki Tutorials, and Sienna Miller! Then there’s AOC with the political statement of the year. I didn’t put them on the list because I wanted to whittle it down to four but trust me, they would be on there if I opened it up to more!
Ultimately, for the most part, most designers pushed the boat out this year. What did you think of the red carpet this year?
